I’ve been growing out my natural hair color for about a year and a half. In the second pic you can really see the progression. Phase 1 was Tara adding in lots of tiny, light blonde highlights on the crown to blend with grey. I toned my hair at home every 4-6 weeks for a while after that. Then stopped with the toner maybe 6-8 months ago. So, the hair on top is natural & chemical-free, the middle lightest part is the last bit of the highlights (like straw - I chop into it as much as I can and can’t wait for that to all be gone!) and the bottom is mostly less damaged/dyed, just-toner affected hair. My first dye job was at 13 and all lifter makes my hair somewhat reddish, so I have never seen my natural, cool-toned hair like what is growing out. Anyhoo, the purpose of the grow out is to not be locked into constant dying for life because of grey roots. Gonna see what nature has to offer me, color-wise, first. Currently, I’m super into the grey that is filtering in with that dark.

The ramification of cutting one’s own hair sometimes includes quirky shoots of hair sticking out. But I like ‘em.
