nice to meet you, mr. robbie
When I try on this cut of dress at a thrift store,
I always battle whether to buy.
They generally seem too simple and I think, “Will I wear this? Is it boring?”
But the truth is - a basic shift is such a classic, easy dress.
Very work-appropriate, but also body flattering for after work.
And easy to style up with different belts and such.
This particular one is fully lined,...
fall! i'm feeling it!
Today’s Texas weather is prompting a double post day!
October will take me to NYC a few times for work,
so I’ve been gathering cooler-weather items in anticipation.
But then!
Yesterday and today in Dallas, we got a very welcome chill.
58 degrees this morning.
How refereshing! (It was still 95 last Friday.)
So, I get to legitimately road test my new wares.
Wine 90s vintage...

made in china
Made in China actually with Eastern design influence.
Novel!
Geez.
Look at this print :
Tiny X’s make up a large rose pattern.
And the embroidered characters on the shoulder?
A special touch.
Progress Matise (?)
top purchased at Buffalo Exchange for $12.
Its bonuses include cool neckline, silky soft fabric, pockets and cat hair proof.

This week on Those Tricks, I’m going :
First up is an outfit I wore over the weekend to my buddy Lauren’s art opening.
The skirt was thrifted for $2.98.
Well built, fine fabric with a mystery label, as it collides with the button hole :
The only Veronesi I could find is mens suits. Hmmmmmm…
Also wearing Luxury Rebel heels from NM Last Call,
Silence + Noise top...
mmmmm chocolate
Check out these cookies I made.
I had limited ingredients, so combined a few recipes from All Recipes
to make cake-like dark chocolate cookies
with a marshmallow top
& a smidegeon of Dove dark chocolate candy
dusted with unsweetened baking cocoa.
I’ve never taken a photo of edibles I’ve made
but these cookies were asking for it.

monkey-ing around
…because monkeys are brown and “they eat” yellow bananas?
I mean, DO THEY really love bananas? I dunno.
Judging from how wrong we get most animal stuff,
I’d guess no.
But apparently, it’s become Those Tricks Banana Week - so, let’s go with it! $.99 thrifted Armani (like made in Italy Armani) cashmere tee
with thrifted $2.98 Elevenses skirt.
Love this...

tally me
Oh my.
I’m feeling too lazy to tally up this outfit.
We’ve seen all the pieces before.
Except maybe the dress?
A simple black strapless I bought at Buffalo Exchange in LA
a decade ago.
It never shows wear, doesn’t wrinkle and repels cat hair.
I suppose the material is at least 10% *magic*
Has anyone seen my grey belt?
It’s gone missing. :(

20 inch waist
Every other day or so,
I get hits from google searches like :
“20 inch waist” and “how to get a 20-inch waist”
All because of this post. (They bounce because I do NOT have the secret to a 20-inch waist)
Some 20-inch waists I have recently frequented include Katherine Helmond of SOAP :
and I luv me some Donna Reed :
Even the bodacious Sophia...

teal-tastic
This is a “party in the back” dress.
Purchased at Dallas vintage shop Ahab Bowen for $26
The brand is “Oops California,”
which I’m throwing in the pot of brand name oopsies.
I love this dress in all its 80s teal-ness.
Very soft and comfy.
Seychelle’s heels, purse and belt all thrifted/resale.
Making this outfit : 100% Resale!

allow myself to introduce myself
Vintage Pykettes blouse thrifted for $1.49.
Things with pictures of themselves on um themselves
crack me up.
I rolled up the full length sleeves high and tight
& used the neck tie as a belt.
I don’t have another Billy Reid to cap off Billy Reid week (haha - there’s some SEO for you),
but this ensemb goes.
Gap wide-legged, navy pants resale from Buffalo Exchange/Long Beach ($16)....

A few days later...
…milling through the dress rack at Buffalo Exchange…hello.
Ooooh a beaut.
What the? Billy Reid!?!
I’d never seen the label or heard of the brand,
then twice in one week? Hmmmm.
This piece was also a keeper.
A layered, medium-weight wool/metal blend wrap dress
with a beautiful built-in silk sash tie.
Yes, please.
It was priced $26, but with my credit at Buffalo, it...

it's billy reid week!
So, I’m flipping through pants at Thrift Town
and pull out this pair extraordinaire.
Clearly made with love and tenderness
with beautiful fabric that holds its shape while soft and flexible,
even at a tight fit, they became mine ($1.99…I couldn’t leave them there).
I wasn’t familiar with the maker : Billy Reid.
Google led me to the (excellently constructed)...

lessons learned
My step mother gave me these documents from
the University of Texas at Austin circa 1965-1967.
A brochure to help a young lady with her packing :
And class literature they had to memorize and were tested on :
Three whole categories!
Which one are you? (And which one do you secretly want to be?)
